History

Our Church History

1873 Fourth Steet Methodist Church 1874 - The Church completed its first building, a one-room frame structure at Fourth and Jones Street in downtown Fort Worth. It became known as the Fourth Street Methodist Church.

1887 Fourth and Jones 1887 - In another step forward, the church moved the original frame building to the rear of the lot to make room for a new brick structure. First Methodist Church became the official name in 1890.
1908- Seventh and Taylor 1908 - Following another period of growth, the church purchased a lot at the corner of Seventh and Taylor and constructed a two-story building of light colored brick and stone with a balcony on each side and one in back of the Sanctuary.
1924 - St. Paul Methodist Episcopal Church at Tenth and Burnet took its place along with other church buildings which were early homes of the First Methodist Church congregation. Our two congregations formed a merger in 1930, nine years ahead of the official unification in 1939.

1929 - Ground was broken for our current facility on the morning of October 29, 1929 - the day the stock market crashed. Through tough economic times, our congregation was determined to complete the church building.
FUMC Today
1930 - Since completing the current facility at Fifth and Henderson, the church has continued to expand, renovate and acquire property, including Lyle Lodge on Eagle Mountain Lake, the Foundation Building, the Children’s Building expansion and the First Street Methodist Mission Building on West First Street.

The FUMC Archive
was officially established in early 2006 by a dedicated group of church members who wanted to ensure the church’s rich history was preserved. The Archive is located in Room 223 of the main church building. Volunteers have worked tirelessly to create a documenting procedure for the items that are already in the church’s possession and for collections that will come to us in the future.  If you are interested in seeing the archive or donating FUMC memorabilia to us please call 817/339-2401
